SMART MOVES: Transforming Transportation
Can FIRST LEGO League teams transform the way we look at transportation? The key to the 2009 “Smart Move” Challenge is accessing people, places, goods and services in the safest, most efficient way possible. In this journey, teams will consider many modes of transportation beyond their daily routine and streamline their options by making smart moves!

FLL Awards
Championship & Qualifying Tournament Awards
Overall Team Performance Awards
- The Champion's Award is the most prestigious of the awards. It encompasses the aspects of the Robot Design Award, the Robot Performance Award, the Project Award, and the Teamwork Award.
- The Young Team Award is like the Champion''s Award except that it is restricted to teams made up of children 11 years old and younger.
- The Rookie Team Award is like the Champion's Award except that it is restricted to teams that have never participated in an FLL tournament before
Robot Design Award
Judges look for teams whose work stands out for its innovation, dependability, or both. To assess innovation, the judges watch the robots work, looking for things that make them say "Wow!" and they interview team members to reveal the less obvious unique and inventive ideas. To assess dependability, the judges interview the teams to learn what solid principles and best practices were used to reduce variability and errors, then consider the most consistent teams from among those that ranked highly.
Robot Performance Award
This award is based on the number of points the team's robot achieves in the performance rounds on the competitive field during the tournament.
Project Award
The Project Award is presented to the team whose quality research, innovative solutions and creative presentation best reflect an in-depth understanding of the various scientific disciplines and issues involved with the Challenge Project. To receive a Project Award or a Champion's Award the team must demonstrate in the tournament judging that they have complete all three required elements of The Project.
Teamwork Award
This award is given to the team that best demonstrates extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit, exceptional partnership, and the utmost respect to their own teammates, and in their support and encouragement of fellow teams. The team presented this trophy demonstrates confidence, energy, enthusiasm, problem solving skills, respect of others, and strong team interaction and group dynamics.
ORTOP FLL Registration
Oregon and SW Washington FLL Teams: After national FLL registration closes, ORTOP will send an e-invite to teams registered in Oregon and SW Washington. Teams will be provided a link to an online registration for a ORTOP Qualifying Tournament. Teams can compete in ONE qualifying event. Participation in ORTOP events are limited to teams residing in Oregon and Clark County, Washington area.
Qualifying Tournament Assignments: After qualifying tournament registration is completed in mid-October we will display a table that gives the Qualifying Tournament for each team. If you have questions about these assignments, please send an email message to questions@ortop.org or call 503-821-1136
Championship Tournament: About 25% of the teams at each Qualifying Tournament will be invited to the Championship Tournament. Those teams that do well enough at an ORTOP Qualifier to be invited to the Championship Tournament will be required to pay an additional registration fee yet to be determined for the 2009 season.
To participate in an Oregon FLL Championship event, teams compete at an ORTOP Qualifying Tournament and advance to the Intel Oregon FIRST LEGO League Championship Tournament.
Out of State Team Policy:Team residing in counties that border Oregon can participate in ORTOP FLL Qualifying events. We extend this invitation for teams that are closer in distance to an Oregon tournament than those in their home state. If an Oregon team's meeting place is closer to an event being held in Idaho, Washington, California or Nevada, those teams can, if they prefer, to contact the FLL Operational Partner outside of Oregon to register for their FLL events.
SDA Teams: SDA Teams are invited to register and participate in ORTOP Qualifying Tournaments. Many tournament locations offer Sunday events and one of the Oregon Championship events is also held on a Sunday. At the request of the SDA FLL National organizers, SDA teams are requested to make attending SDA FLL events a first priority over non-SDA FLL events.
