Working with a team.
FIRST LEGO League teams are formed from five to ten children from nine to fourteen years old. As a volunteer, you have at least four choices as far as the role you would play:
(1) You can work with a teacher with students in the target age bracket to use LEGO robotics as part of a regular class, as part of an after school club or class, or something similar. After talking to a teacher, your involvement can start with a single classroom visit and then you can decide whether you have the time and interest to continue.
(2) You can work with the leader of an existing club like AWSEM, MESA,, Boys & Girls Club, Scouts, etc. We can introduce you to more details and connections to these organizations. After talking to a club leader, your involvement can start with a single visit to a single club meeting. You can decide later whether you have the time and interest to continue as a technical mentor or a team coach.
(3) You can recruit the children yourself and work out any plan you like as to how often they meet, where they meet, how often you attend the meetings, etc. The primary goal is to help the children learn about technical problem solving. The secondary goal is to help them get ready for the tournament in early December.
(4) You can help recruit other coaches to facilitate the creation of lots of teams.

We will be holding workshops for volunteers from now until October 2003. At these workshops you will learn more about FIRST LEGO League. You will have the opportunity to build and program a small robot. You will be introduced to how you can help ensure that a wide variety of children have the opportunity to build team skills and gain insight into how teamwork and creativity are used by engineers to solve practical problems. If you are interested in attending one of these workshops at no charge see Workshops. If you cannot attend one of the currently scheduled workshops but would like be kept informed, please contact us by email and/or fill out the Volunteer Information Form. A sample team budget is available in Adobe Acrobat format..
