Referees and Judges Wanted
Because of the growth of the program this year we need many more judges and referees. There will be fourteen
Local Tournaments in December 2004 and one statewide tournament on January 16, 2005. Each of these tournaments
needs many referees and judges. If you have already agreed to serve in one of these roles, please see the training
schedules below to choose a session to attend.
Referees monitor the performance of the teams and the robots during the table competition and score the
results after each round. There are also associated roles including table resetters and scorekeeper.
Judges assess the teams in many categories, including originality, problem solving
and the ability to improvise. They also examine the robots' construction, mechanical principals, strategic design
and programming applications.
(1) Technical Judges: Interview team members about the design and programming of the robot they have created to
solve some of the missions of the No Limits Challenge.
(2) Presentation Judges: Listen to each team's presentation on their No
Limits Project and ask questions about it.
Judges will be needed for about six hours per tournament. A judge can volunteer for one, two, or three of the 14
Local Tournaments in December. Most of the local tournaments host about 20 teams. The State Tournament in January
2005 will host 70 to 80 teams, so many more judges will be needed. Most of the judges for the State Tournament
will be those that have served as a judge for at least one Local Tournament in December 2004.
If you are unfamiliar with the referee and judge roles, attending a training session is a great way to learn about
them. In the meantime, if you have questions about what is involved in serving a referee or judge, please contact
-- Referees: Cheryl Thoen: cthoen@teleport.com
-- Judges: Bruce Schafer: schaferb@capital.ous.edu
Note: Coaches and mentors of teams and parents of team members should not serve as judges or referees. Parents
are encouraged to volunteer to help in other ways at the tournaments. Please
drop us a note at ortop@ortop.org
